National Blood Donor Month

There is no better way to start the New Year than to do your part to help those in need. January is National Blood Donor Month and it is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves to help save lives. National Blood Donor Month has been celebrated since 1970 as a way to bring attention to the need for blood, especially during the winter months. It also serves to help celebrate everyone who takes time out of his or her day to donate blood.

You do not need a special reason to donate blood. Whether you decide to donate just because you think it is the right thing to do or because you have a family member or friend who needs blood, each time you donate you can save up to three lives. There is a constant need for blood, and every time you donate you can feel good knowing that you have helped change or save someone’s life.

The process to donate blood is very fast and simple. After a mini-physical to check your temperature, hemoglobin level, blood pressure, and pulse, you will be set up in a comfortable chair to donate. The actual donation process only takes about 10 minutes and uses a small needle that feels like a quick pinch. If you want to donate plasma, red cells, or platelets, the donation process can take up to 2 hours. After donating around a pint of blood, you get to relax and enjoy a delicious snack and something to drink. You are able to continue with your normal daily activities after donating, just make sure to stay well hydrated.
