Safety Tips for the 4th

The warm weather this 4th of July means spending quality time with your loved ones outdoors. All the fun 4th of July activities can easily distract you from potential safety hazards. Keeping these 4th of July safety tips in mind can help ensure that everyone has a safe and fun holiday weekend.

  • Never leave a lit barbecue unattended, and never let children or animals around a grill while it is in use.
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water to put out any accidental fires that may start while grilling.
  • Make sure to keep hot food hot and cold food cold to avoid any food borne illnesses.
  • If you are planning on lighting your on fireworks, make sure to check your local laws to ensure they are legal.
  • Never use illegal fireworks, since they are much more dangerous.
  • When lighting fireworks, make sure to clear the launch area from any flammable materials, such as decorations and dry grass.
  • Never try to relight a dud firework. Wait at least 20 minutes before picking up a dud.
  • Place all used fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them away to ensure they are no longer a fire hazard.
  • Make sure to supervise children at all time while around water.
  • Make sure that people who are not comfortable with their swimming abilities use the proper safety equipment, such as a life jacket, when around water.
  • Always use sunscreen when going outside. Make sure to use sunscreen with at least 15 SPF and that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
