Safety Tips for your Outdoor Toys

Owning outdoor toys, such as a boat or ATV, allows you to enjoy all of the outdoors. While enjoying all of your toys, it is important to make sure to stay safe. Follow these safety tips to ensure that you can enjoy your toys for as long as possible.

For your ATV:

  • Always wear the proper protective gear. Invest in a properly fitting helmet, riding boots, and sturdy long pants and a long sleeve shirt.
  • Inspect your ATV before taking it out. Check the brakes and lights to ensure that they are properly working. Also make sure to check to ensure that the tires are properly inflated and you have enough gas.
  • Let someone know where you are going. Tell a friend or family member where you are going and what time you are expecting to be back, so that they can call the authorities if you get stuck somewhere.
  • Take caution when braking. Braking suddenly with the front brake could cause you to be thrown off the vehicle. Brake slowly whenever possible.

For your Boat:

  • Check your life jacket. It is required to have enough life jackets on board for each person on the boat. Check the life jackets at least once a year to make sure that they fit properly and are not worn.
  • Do not speed. Speeding on water can easily lead to a crash. Make sure that you are aware of the water conditions and any hazards in the water.
  • Do not drink and drive. Drinking and driving a boat is more dangerous than drinking and driving a car. Make sure to have a designated driver for all of your boating trips.
  • Know the rules. Waterways do not have the same traffic signals that roads do. Make sure that you know the rules so that you can avoid accidents while on the water.
