Stay Safe this Halloween with These Tips

Frightening girlsHalloween is just around the corner, which means it is the perfect time to make sure you have the right costume and your jack o’ lantern is looking its best. More importantly, it is vital to make sure everyone knows how to stay safe this holiday. Keep these Halloween safety tips in mind to ensure everyone has a fun and safe holiday.

  • Do not allow small children to carve their own pumpkins. Instead have them draw faces on the pumpkins, and carve them yourself. You can also let them decorate the pumpkin with paint, glitter, or stickers.
  • If you are lighting your pumpkin with a candle, make sure it is on a sturdy surface, and away from all flammable materials, such as curtains.
  • When choosing a costume for your children, try to pick one with light colors. If your child insists on a black witch or ninja costume, use reflective tape or stickers to make them more visible to passing drivers. Also, make sure to choose a costume that fits properly so they do not trip or fall while trick or treating.
  • Use face paint instead of a mask to complete the costume, since masks can obstruct a child’s view.
  • Have your child carry a flashlight or glow stick to make them more visible to passing drivers and help them see better in the dark.
  • When crossing the street, always make sure to only cross in designated crosswalks, and follow all traffic laws.
  • If you have older children who are trick or treating with friends, make sure they stick to well-known neighborhoods and agree on a specific time when they should be home.
