Tips For Senior Safety

Winter is a difficult time for everyone’s mobility. From frozen windshields requiring constant scraping to slippery walkways to iced-over roads, getting from one place to another becomes a challenge during the colder months. As you age, existing mobility issues compounds those challenges, so it is especially important that seniors are protected during the winter. To keep every generation of your family safe, consider these winter safety tips.

  • Make sure that the interior of the home is ready to brave even the harshest winter storm. Keep it stocked with plenty of water, non-perishable food, flashlights with batteries, and warm layers of clothing. Also, ensure that it stays warm and, if that requires the use of a space heater, that it is being properly used to eliminate the risk of a house fire.
  • Keep the outdoor walkways and driveways clear. If your senior family member is not up to maintaining these areas, ask neighbors about helping shovel and encourage your own family members to pitch in. Keep a good shovel and plenty of deicer easily accessible so everyone can lend a hand.
  • If a storm comes in and cuts out power, make sure that your senior family member has someone to stay with him or her or offer to make space in your own home. If you cannot physically be with your family member, check in via phone regularly to ensure he or she is okay.
  • Arrange transportation, not just for necessary items but also to get out of the house and get some fresh air.
