3 Times When You Should Check Your Insurance

Make sure your insurance policies are up to date by reviewing them regularly.

Insurance is designed to protect you, your family, home, car, and property from the unexpected. But it can only do its job if the coverage is up-to-date and in line with your needs. Reviewing your insurance is important, but it can be confusing to know when you are supposed to sit down and read through your policy. Take a look at these three moments in life that call for an insurance review.

1. When your current policies are about to expire.

It may be easy to hit that auto-renew button, but it pays to shop around for coverage when your policies are about to expire. Make some time to meet with your agent so that you can discuss your coverage needs, new demands on finances, and your protection goals.

2. When your family status changes.

Getting married? Having a baby? Adopting a child? As your family grows, your need for protection becomes a priority. You may need to take out or review your current life insurance and disability income insurance. Additionally, if you lose family members through death or divorce, you should review and change the beneficiary designations on your existing policies.

3. When you move or remodel your home.

Making upgrades to your home, no matter how small, can have an impact on its value. If the value of your home changes, your home insurance policy will need to, too. If you move or down-size your property, you may be over-insured. If you move into a larger home, you will need to take out more coverage. In all three instances, you should review your coverage to ensure you are adequately protected.
